Literacy Narrative

As a child my mother did not get to read as much as I like to because she had to work all the time to take care of me. When I got older I did not have any kids so the only person I may read to ever blue moon was my dog. Even then when I read any books I skim through the book for the most interesting part instead of reading the whole book little by little, so I know it was a lot of good information missed. In my past I was never taught SQ4R but I always wanted to learn the concept of it, and being in college now has brought me a long way to learning different skills.

I really wish looking back on things now that read more book and not just skim through to look at the topic of it but hey I learned from it and is better now. Also I never got into audiobooks it seems like it would have been better, but hey I never read the regular old fashion way. When I attend high school and middle school I really did not take reading serious, to be honest it was not my favorite at all. So I really did not get into reading that much and sometimes I regret it right to this day. I truly want to become a better reader and learn a lot of new things that I read but again I am a college student now which this have put me on the right track to success.

When I look back and see how reading is a important role I feel like reading is a life changer and a learning and developing new skills to enhance me to get further in my education. I  never knew why reading wasn’t my favorite back then but now it is a number one priority in my life. You would of thought back in my earlier days I had a learning disorder but I did not I was just being lazy with my reading abilities. Now I am in college and learning a lot and enjoying every minute of it, also I am a first year college student, and I  am the second generation to go to college in my family and proud of it as well.

Multitasking and Management

When you are dealing with multitasking your brain begin to work even harder than before. Multitasking is the handling of more than one task at the same time by a single person therefore yourself. This could really be a lot on one person because it does come with great responsibility and you have to focus. As I research about this the reason it is so hard to multitask is because the brain an not be in two place at one time. Even with two people studies shows it is hard to still mulititask. Not only can people not process two tasks simultaneously, but it also takes longer to multitask than it would to do the individual tasks one after the other.

According to Steven G. Yantis, the chairman of the psychological and brain sciences department at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Whether or not today's students grow up intrinsically better adapted to multitasking, they will need to develop that skill to cope in the modern economy to even begin to think of this task. There also was a study done on college kids and there multitasking skills and for the most part, the number was high for students that could not keep up or meet the quote. For this particular topic I found myself having a hard time multitasking when two people are talking at the same time. Sometimes you try to hear both parties at the same time and try to respond to both, but for me that is a difficult task so I ask them to speak one at a time.

A lot of people might not admit it but trying to hear two people talking at one time you are bound to miss some of the information they are speaking about. For one the brain is to design to just focus on one thing at a time, the brain is very unique by having three parts to the brain which are reptilian, limbic, neocortex. With these three function the brain is setup to do different things at different times so therefore even the brain is design to do these things one at a time. For example when someone is talking to me and then another person start talking to me I find it very difficult to focus on both. Being that our brain is designed to take on one thing at a time, I then have to make a choice on who I will tune into and listen to, and who I am not going to pay attention to not being rude but I can only focus on one person speaking at one time.

Although if you try listening to both people speaking at the same time, it is very hard because in the end you going to miss out on one of the conversation, because you can only tune in to one at a time. So I feel like the facts are true about multitasking you are not a computer, nor are you a robot, you can only do one task at a time. Therefore I feel as if you should just not overload the brain in trying to multitask just let the brain process things one thing at a time.
